The inaugural Dubai World Championship was held on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The Dubai World Championship is the culmination of The Race to Dubai, the season-long competition that replaced The European Tour Order of Merit at the beginning of the 2008/2009 schedule and encompasses The Tour’s most prestigious tournaments, the Major Championships and the World Golf Championships. Beginning on 19 November 2009, the top 60 players teed off over four days with no cut on the spectacular Earth course by Greg Norman. As over 60,000 eager spectators poured onto the Earth course to watch a scintilating four days of golf, it was the Englishman, Lee Westwood, who claimed victory in the inaugural event which also earned him the top spot in The Race to Dubai rankings for 2009.
