The province of East Flanders is situated in the Flemish region of Belgium. Ghent is the capital. The province of East Flanders is a former territory of the people who lived Menapii. The city lies at the confluence of four rivers that are the Scheldt, the Lys, Lieve and Moere, and is the second largest port in Belgium, after Antwerp. His name also proceeded from the Gaulish word "Ganda" which means "confluence". It was built in the twelfth century by Philip of Alsace, in order to defend the city.
